ALWAYS THE QUIET ONES
www.alwaysthequietones.com
Gangland vocals are very retro. They're also the preserve of either Hardcore bands from the nineties, or Glam bands from the eighties. Quite why Always The Quiet Ones chose to open their two-track single with this very dated sound is curious; the sounds that follow are, whilst certainly not uniquely modern, not exactly stuck in the past. But, it is very anthemic. They clearly want to play festival stages with this stuff. Opener 'Drought', shouty intro aside, does its job as a festival rocker, complete with Slipknot-lite ending. The guitars are straight out of noughties post-grunge, but the song writing is more of a modern take on Love/Hate. 'Ghost in the Filament' sadly fails to live up to the coolness of its title, and is really more of the same; big choruses, eyes on the big stages. It's all very cynical. Audio Pot Noodle; a little bit synthetic, possibly bad for you, but yet still a guilty pleasure. So, I'm a little conflicted with this. On the one hand, I dislike the fact it appears soulless and designed for a specific audience, on a specific type of stage. But, equally, it's not that horrible that I can't listen to it. Stylistically different to, but sharing the same dumb likeability of, Ugly Kid Joe's 'Everything About You'. And I bought their album back in the day. So, yeah, have a listen; don't expect intelligence, but do expect to party. And. sometimes, isn't that what we all need to do?
