THE ANTIX

‘Dare I’ is a 3 track single from The Antix, a West Yorkshire 5 piece who play pop with a raw edge. The sound they have created could have come straight out of the 70s US punk/new wave scene like Johnny Thunders meets a rockier Blondie. This might be a long way from metal but this release oozes energy and attitude and is most definitely worth a listen. The single ‘Dare I’ and second track ‘The Cat’ are basic tracks that appear quite ordinary at first but become more enjoyable with repeated listens with Grace Bickerton's Gwen Stefani influenced vocals eventually grabbing your attention. It is the final track ‘Never Know’, however, which really stands out. This starts off quietly, dominated by Grace's excellent vocal, before the band kick into an exciting groove, which is generally maintained throughout the track. The middle slows down with Grace's voice cutting through once again. The track gets back into the groove with Matthew Archer delivering a wild rock 'n' roll solo giving the song a great rocking finish. This track brings the best out of Grace's vocal talents showing off a melodic side alongside the aggression shown on all three tracks. Although The Antix are not metal, they're still a band that are worth checking out. Should they succeed, they would certainly make a refreshing change to the bland drivel, which currently dominates the UK pop charts. Future releases are eagerly anticipated.
