ANTLERED MAN
www.antleredman.co.uk
London quintuplet Antlered Man is a bunch of quirky, anti-establishment musical freaks that spend many a morn walking the heady highlands of anti-capitalist Dead Kennedys punk, their middays musing in the murky midfield of pop sensibilities, and their evenings seething in the livid lowlands of metal. ‘Surrounded by White Men’ is a Michael Moore-influenced diatribe against the Bush administration and nepotism in anaemic institutions of power. Though Bush is long gone, this is a theme that will, woefully, resonate for a long time. The accompanying cover version of The Archies’ ‘Sugar Sugar’ is pure bass dirt accompanied by a cheery glockenspiel and madcap rendition of the vocal line that acerbically attacks the cultural dominance of fetishized images of commodified and specious ideologies. The lovechild of XTC, The Melvins, QOTSA, Primus, and all things peculiar, sardonic, angry, and iconoclastic, Antlered Man are a very interesting – and fun – bastard. After you buy this, you may want to head over to their website for a free download of ‘Platoono of Uno’, another heated hymn to absurdity. Whispered vocals that slowly evolve into psychopathic calm and head-bashing Weltschmerz breeze between the fuzz bass furrows, colourful drum work, and crooked and contorted guitar lines, Antlered Man has a sound that is curiously captivating. Highly recommended.
