ASH WILSON
www.ashwilsonmusic.com
Here we have a two track single from Lincolnshire blues rocker Ash Wilson, released ahead of his debut solo album, 'Broken Machine'. Lead track is a radio edit of the album's rocked-up title number. A mid-paced affair, it's genericism all the day, so there's nothing necessarily new here. Likewise with the less rocky, bluesier, slower tempo 'Words of a Woman'. However, what Wilson does bring to the table are some great vocals with the expressive, resonant tones of his voice, together with some fine lead guitar. There might be no flashy displays of fretboard virtuosity, but his soloing is at one with songs' instrumentations, and conveys a lot of emotional weight. The songwriting might very well be clichéd, but his musical manoeuvres within the two generically conceived compositions are what makes this an engaging listen. The man's got talent, for sure. And if the album turns up for review, too, I'll look forward to digesting this duo of songs within the context of his wider creativity.
