BAD HABIT

Swedish band Bad Habit were formed in 1986 and had released 1 mini and 7 full albums up to and including their last release in 2005. They play a brand of soft rock, in the vein of Drive She Said, Mark Free and early Bon Jovi (pre-‘Slippery When Wet’). ‘Above And Beyond’ is well produced, musically very strong and well executed, which is evident from the first notes of the opening track ‘I Don't Want You’ through to the closing bars of final track ‘I Need Someone’. The album's highlights include ‘Just A Heartbeat Away’, which features some nice guitar work, ‘Surrender’ and ‘Calling Your Name’, which feature superb choruses and are generally high quality ballads with the former being my favourite track on the album. ‘A Lot To Learn’ is a ballad that has a start which reminds me of U2's ‘With Or Without You’. The band never stray from outside this music's restrictive, predictable boundaries and too many average songs with the all too familiar sound prevent me from giving this album a higher rating. The lyrics are typical of this genre, concentrating on the tried and trusted subjects of heartache and love. ‘Above And Beyond’ is unlikely to appeal to anyone who has a preference for other forms of rock and metal but at least fans of the aforementioned bands and soft rock in general should find this album enjoyable.
