BEISSERT

Beissert have one of the heaviest guitar tones I've heard since The Galactic Cowboys graced my ears back in the early nineties. In fact opener ‘The Pusher’ reminds me of ‘Kill Floor’ by the Texan troupe. Beissert are, as evident by the majority of their lyrics, German. Forget the press release's insistence of a combination of Crowbar and Pantera (that's just to get people excited with big-names), and imagine ‘Blind’-era Corrosion of Conformity, albeit down-tuned, if Kyle Thomas (circa his Floodgate days) sang for them, and you'll be a little closer. If he was nursing a sore throat. ‘Die Fabelhafte Welt der Agonie’ is the first real interesting piece; a Western saloon-style piano piece. Business as usual follows though, and after a few minutes boredom is really starting to affect my listening pleasure. If that weren't enough, this track ‘Saxon:Blood:Rock’ (holy shit!) starts with some near-math riffing but devolves into by-the-numbers 80s chanting. A swift change of style follows and we are confronted by a GWAR/Green Jelly/Slipknot inflected rock and roll number. Perhaps Beissert have yet to find their niche, but I hope they find it soon because another mess like this will be their undoing. However, it all ends with that delightful piano piece and I'm left wondering if I might have enjoyed this album more had it consisted solely of that.
