BRAIN DRILL
www.myspace.com/braindrill
Brain Drill formed in 2005 originally as a side project of guitarist Dylan Ruskin, and featuring former Vital Remains drummer Marco Pitruzella. This release is rooted very much in the tradition of technical death metal, with hints of math-metal. The first thing to hit you on pressing the play button is how accomplished the musicianship is (kudos especially to the aforementioned Marco Pitruzella for his incredible talents behind the kit). That ordinarily doesn't necessarily float my boat on its own merits, and there are moments on this disc that seem shoe-horned in, with the sole remit only to impress. Impressive it is, of course, but the flow of some songs is broken by inexplicable and near-intolerable fret-wankery. However, there are some incredibly well written tunes here - particularly as evidenced on the title track for instance with some incredible break-downs and chugging riffery (although sadly let-down by more faux-virtuosity). Extra points are earned for the titling of track 5 however; 'Forcefed Human Shit'! If Brain Drill concentrated more on writing classy technical death metal, and less on disjointed math-madness, they could very well become a first-tier metal band; not to say it has harmed Meshuggah too badly. As it stands, they will no doubt remain a cult favourite amongst the hardcore metal fraternity, which is probably what they want.
