BROKEN LUNGS

Broken Lungs are a new band from the fine city of Liverpool. The line-up consists of Karl Eginton (Lead vocals and guitar), lead guitarist Carl Fitzpatrick and the rhythm section of bassist Alex Forde and Mark Highdale on drums. This five track release kicks off with a couple of frenetic, high energy tracks in ‘We Stand Stall’ and ‘I’m Done With Desperation’. While these cuts are well played and show promise they are not dissimilar in style to what a lot of other up and coming young bands are offering at the moment. However, the band show that they are, collectively, not a one trick pony during the course of the next three songs. ‘Try as I Might’ has all the energy of its predecessors but features a quieter passage which introduces a balance between light and shade and shows the band’s versatility and a musical maturity that belies their youth. ‘Alleyways’ follows and is a less up tempo track that has a really epic feel and wouldn’t be out of place being played in a stadium, never mind a club. ‘Lost At Sea’ brings the set to an end; it couldn’t be a greater contrast to the tracks that open this release. It is a gentle, low-fi acoustic number that conveys real emotion. The band have run the gamut in terms of styles on this release but it shows, as already stated, that they have versatility and, as a consequence, are adaptable and willing to experiment. In my opinion, this will stand the band in good stead and means that they have every chance of being around for the long term and, perhaps, being another illustrious name in Liverpool’s rich musical history.
