Only in very exceptional cases of sheer brilliance or chronic awfulness does an intro track count towards even making a slight impact on my opinion of an album. Luckily, or unluckily, ‘It Was Never Enough’ is neither, so there’s a pleasant minute or so of piano that bears no resemblance to the rest of the EP. And good on them, I say. Once we get into the EP “proper” it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The music itself gets off to a promising start in ‘But We Still Keep Moving’ with heavy use of percussion and a building guitar part, then the vocals kick in. It’s not that they’re abysmally awful, it’s just that they sound so strained and forced that it makes your throat hurt just listening to it. Hopefully this is just an aural illusion or the poor bugger’s not going to last very long.

Other than that, there’s not a lot to report really. The musicianship does show a lot of potential and there are moments when they’re pushing themselves right up again the progressive box but, sadly, never quite manage to push through. It’s not a completely lost cause and there is some potential in there for a good band but they just fall a little bit short of the mark on this one. I found that, although the EP’s perfectly good, it actually stands up better when you’re not really concentrating on listening to it. Not necessarily an insult (honest) and with a few changes it could have been a solid EP rather than a fairly average one with some moments keeping it afloat. Alas…
