CAPTAIN BLACK BEARD
www.captainblackbeard.net
Captain Black Beard hail from Sweden, currently a musical hotbed for all things rock related. They made their live debut in October 2009 and are making a name for themselves on the Stockholm club circuit. The band consist of Sakaria Bjorklund on vocals and guitar, Fredrick Svennson on guitar and the rhythm section of Victor Hogberg on drums and bassist Robert Majd. This eponymous release is the band’s first full length recording and production duties were handled by David Castillo who has previously worked with Opeth and Katatonia. Don’t expect a similar sound to Opeth or Katatonia on this release, however, as it is very much at the other end of the rock spectrum. For the most part, the album consists of commercial and radio-friendly cuts. Each track has its merits and there really isn’t a weak song on the album. The highlights are ‘Rock Is My Life’, which has the potential to be a big hit, ‘American Dream’, which has a feel of ‘Electric’ era Cult about it, ‘Concrete Jungle’, which has some insightful lyrics about living on a lawless estate and ‘Rock Bottom’, which has a slower tempo but is full of emotion. The album is well produced with the guitar and vocals, in particular, possessing real clarity and the band pull out all the stops to deliver great performances on every track. The band are due to head to the States for a small tour imminently and hopefully they will find a receptive audience for their music; their sound is tailor made for America and it should give their careers a massive boost – it’s the least they deserve!
