CHASING DRAGONS
www.facebook.com/musicchasingdragons
The comparisons Chasing Dragons have been given don’t really do them justice. I’ve looked around and I keep seeing the phrase “imagine Brody Dalle fronting Avenged Sevenfold”. There are two main things wrong with this; firstly, she sounds absolutely nothing like Brody Dalle, and I’ve spent a fair chunk of time listening to our Brody, and, secondly, they don’t really sound like Avenged Sevenfold. Apart from that, the description is 100% accurate. If you’re a Brody Dalle or Avenged Sevenfold fan, you have now been warned. Lies and propaganda aside, they are a really good band. ‘Spawn of the Succubus’ (“Wooo!”) is one of those songs that immediately grabs you as it’s got everything really: a solid classic rock riff, strong vocals, catchy tune and plenty of “woo”ing. It’s not clear whether this is an ideal opening track as it’s one that’s instantly likeable or a terrible choice because the rest of the album’s a bit of a grower, if you can forgive them for plagiarising ‘Black Velvet’ (oh wait, it’s a cover).

Chasing Dragon’s music is constructed from solid riffs with very little faff and slightly nasal vocals, which suit the music down to a tee and while there’s an underlying catchiness to the songs it does take a few listens to really “get it”. It’s definitely one for those who like snotty punk metal and maybe not for those of you who love an album with a ballad on it. Although there may be a limited amount of innovation here, they do what they do very well and they even give us a glimpse of their (acoustic) live sound with few “bonus tracks” (I won’t call them “filler”, that’d be unfair) and you’ll be glad to hear that it sounds okay. Not mind blowing, but okay. The band are just likeable for reasons that are difficult to explain, which is good when you’re trying to write a review for their album.
