‘Only Come Out At Night’ is the second solo release from the multi talented Swedish musician/producer/songwriter Chris Laney just one year after his impressive debut ‘Pure’. Laney repeats the successful formula delivering some more high quality melodic rock. Just like ‘Pure’, ‘Only Come Out At Night’ is tight, excellently produced and features some top draw guest musicians, and of particular note are Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy/Motorhead/Wild Horses), Ian Haugland (Europe) and Conny Bloom (Electric Boys/Hanoi Rocks). Laney's strong, passionate voice, which still reminds me of Richard Black from Shark Island and Ken Tamplin in places, never fails to impress. The album is chock full of melodic rock gems with ‘Love So Bad’, ‘Gotta Run’, ‘I Had Enuff’ and the riff laden closer ‘Daydream’ being prime examples. ‘B4 It's 2Late’ is an absolutely stunning power ballad and the album's stand out track. ‘One Kiss Tonight’ and ‘Playing With Fire’ are likeable bouncy, poppy tracks with immediately catchy choruses. Much of this album is influenced by Def Leppard at their peak but Laney demonstrates that he can write songs that are far more memorable than what the vastly overrated Sheffield band have released in over 20 years. Laney also possesses a much stronger voice than the flat and largely unimpressive Joe Elliott. ‘Only Come Out At Night’ can be recommended to anyone who has a love of great melodies and instantly enjoyable hooks and should certainly appeal to any Leppard fan craving for a return to the quality that has been largely missing from their work since their classic ‘Pyromania’ and ‘Hysteria’ albums.
