CITY OF ASHES
www.cityofashes.co.uk
City of Ashes have spent the majority of their time since their formation in 2009 travelling the length and breadth of the country honing their talents on stage. They have now put all of their practice and hard work to the test in the recording studio with their debut EP, ‘Then There Was a Hand in the Darkness’. After reading through the long list of bands that they have shared the stage with while touring and the bands that similarities are being drawn between like Lostprophets and Thursday, a general idea and expectation of their sound had formed in my mind before I listened to their EP. Initial impressions were not quite what I was expecting but were nonetheless good with their opening track ‘Falling Star’ starting with a steady build-up into a catchy riff accompanied by memorable vocals. The overall pace for the EP seems to be set to a gentle stroll with periods that build and speed up which creates a sound that is easy to listen to and gives the faster sections more emphasis. The vocals and production quality throughout the EP makes the listening experience a really enjoyable one, weaving the songs into your mind and leaving quite an impression. Time can only tell if the EP can work its magic and give the four-piece from the southeast a place among the big names.
