COILGUNS
www.reverbnation.com/coilguns
Featuring a trio of musicians from The Ocean, namely Louis Jucker, Jona Nido and Luc Hess, Coilguns follow last year's split with Kunz in the form of new EP 'Stadia Rods'. And they've built upon the early promise and solid foundations shown on said release with the six new cuts on offer here which expand and progress their sound into greater innovative territory. More frantic, incisively executed riffage fills much off the playing time, mixed up with passages of down-tempo, dissonant, sludgy grind that oozes sonic despair and a blackened melancholy. Twistedly inventive and ever changing time signatures courtesy of skilled sticksman Hess make for a challenging and engaging listen throughout over which Nido exercises his unrestrained riffs, licks and other abominations of guitar lunacy with heavy potency in all kinds of fretboard aberrations. Topped off with the full-on aggression, belligerence and angst-inducing delivery of Jucker's growled screams, Coilguns are one of the most genuinely heavy bands out there right now. It's not manufactured or forced heaviness by any means, rather their whole vibe and inherent intensity comes across as entirely natural. I've yet to catch the band in action but I can only imagine how much more intense their material would be in a live environment and with Jucker credited on their Facebook page with both vocals and "crowd fighting" (metaphorical/literal?), it sounds like any audience would be in for a delirious experience. For now, though, I'll have to make do with 'Stadia Rods' which is controlled cacophonic chaos at its most potent.
