DEPTH
www.myspace.com/depththeband
Depth are from Norfolk and are a post-hardcore quartet. At least that's what the press sheet informs. Post-hardcore? Well, that's obviously one of those equivocal genre labels appropriated by PR peeps and bands themselves in a transparent attempt to convince that what you'll be listening to will be new, fresh, and transcends established genre idioms in some way. I've always been dubious as to anything branded with the "post" prefix. So post-hardcore? Oh fuck no, rather what constitutes this miserable excuse for a record is a series of badly structured, uninteresting tunes that can only be described as quasi-emo, pseudo-alt-rock, weaker-than-weak metal drivel. Actually, there are some okay-ish passages of music during some tracks where guitars, bass and drums combine to produce some vaguely acceptable sonance that verges on what could be loosely construed as melodically catchy. However, when the music does occasionally promise to shine, and generally throughout, the vocals kill the entire listening experience. So much so that the brief moments of silence between each track are perhaps what's best about this album. Hurray for the between song gaps. However, it's not long before each new track kicks in with more vocal drivel that would have had me hitting the stop button with great urgency after a couple of minutes if I didn't have to review this musical sewage. What makes the vocals so bad, which are mainly clean with occasional growls, are not their mock-angst-emo stylings, rather their tuneless, dissonant tones. Gratingly so. There are evidently attempts to sing in the right key and Paul Hardy, the guy responsible for this abomination of nasal-wailing, does occasionally hit some of the right notes, but seems to meander through a discordant scale of all the wrong notes before he reaches where he needs to be. 'Situations Fulfilled' is utterly terrible in just about every conceivable way. Please avoid. Your ears will thank you for it.
