DEPTH

Depth are a ‘Post Hardcore’/‘Rock’/’Screamo’ outfit from the East of England and ‘Waiting For The Waves’ is their new EP due to be released on October 29th. They formed in 2006 and released a debut full length album ‘Situations Fulfilled’ in 2010. In this time they have also been praised by Kerrang and Rocksound magazines and XFM. Right, they are the facts, and the reason why I cannot get enthusiastic about this EP or band. Depth sound uncannily like Funeral For A Friend; in fact, let’s be honest, they sound like every other ‘Post Hardcore’ band and had this been released in 2003 it still would have been uninspiring. To be fair, first track ‘All I Know’ starts with a promising riff and then the vocals let everything down. They are bland and not powerful enough to carry the songs. All five songs are hampered by the same problem. They also seem to struggle with not really knowing where to go once a song has started. Depth introduce so many different riffs and sections that the songs become very muddled and all end up sounding the same, and apart from that very first riff I would be hard pressed to point out anything remotely memorable in the EP’s twenty minute running time.

This is, of course, all very much a case of “I’m just not keen on this genre of rock music” and judging by the bands they have supported and indeed the media coverage they are receiving, they will have a healthy future promoting their music to people that believe rock was actually created in the year 2000! I also, unfortunately, have to once again point out the totally over the top press release (realising of course that it is written by the same people who also look after Mortdelamer - another drab band I recently reviewed). Where do comments like “Coalescing the old school metal riffery of Iron Maiden”, “aided by ear-shattering pounding rhythms will remain permanently fixated in your head” and “Depth have cultivated a sound that will blow your face clean off” come from? I sometimes wonder if the people writing these things have actually listened to the band they are promoting or indeed the bands they are comparing them to! At the very best Depth are average and when the waves finally do arrive this EP might well have already sunk!
