D GENERATION
www.dgeneration.us
D Generation hail from New York, with the band’s line-up comprising of vocalist Jesse Malin, guitarist Danny Sage, Howie Pyro on bass, Richard Bacchus, also on guitar, and drummer Michael Wildwood. ‘Nothing is Anywhere’ is their fourth release and the first for some 17 years!

This release offers 13 tracks that are fairly rattled through in the space of 43 minutes, an indication that the band like to get straight to the point and are not ones for a meandering approach to song writing. They have their roots in punk but this album shows an evolution in their sound as, alongside the sneering vocal style of Malin, whose vocals are reminiscent of Mick Jagger and Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum, and the in-your-face instrumentation, there is actually a lot of melody incorporated into the songs on this release.

The highlights for me are probably ‘Lonely Ones’ and ‘Hatful of Rain’, which stand out from the crowd. That is not to say, however, that the rest of the tracks are not up to much – far from it as, considering the production method used was to record all of the songs in one or two takes, this is an admirably strong collection.

I must admit to approaching this review with a hint of scepticism as punk, or musical offshoots thereof, has never really been of great interest. Having given ‘Nothing is Anywhere’ a few listens, however, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very good release and I would recommend it, even if you don’t like punk!
