DOOMED FROM DAY ONE
www.myspace.com/doomedfromdayone
After a collage of sounds acting as a warning appears a metalcore riff that’s about as predictably metalcore as you can get. Then, with ‘Pretending’ comes an equally predictably metalcore vocal delivery, y’know, the “I’m always angry at absolutely everything all of the time” forced growl that some take to be default setting for metal. And the processed guitar sound is just awful, particularly as the guitarists wank themselves off at every opportunity. Interspersing ‘Pretending’ with countless solos may have appeared a good idea but its execution is too much a distraction and becomes detrimental to the song. The songs are all pounding fistfuls of metal that shift very quickly from riff to riff, building up to breakdown to build up again to bring up another pummelling riff. And that’s how it goes, over and over again. There’s too little here to find appealing other than the capability of the musicians. But technical ability doesn’t make a song. And DFD1 prove that technical ability doesn’t equal musicianship, and, further, that technical ability can’t conceal musical flaws. The middle section of ‘Depths of Imagination’ provides an opportunity for the musicians to show us what they can do. The clean chords almost – almost, that is – have a jazz fusion sound to them that would provide a much better guitarist scope enough to indulge in something much more challenging and interesting than the bland melody that somehow found its way into the recording. Instead of demonstrating their musical capabilities, it announces their as-yet undeveloped musicianship. And the solo on ‘You Were Meant To Suffer’ is just offensive, a pile of meandering tunes that are off-key but not in a good way. And that’s not to mention the atrociously dull and jagged riff that it’s played over. This is another band doing what’s been done to death. Should they continue on this path, they really are Doomed From Day One.
