ELECTRIC RIVER
www.electricriver.co.uk
Kent's Electric River are a name I've heard bandied around for some time now and, with a fair amount of buzz in the media, I'm not entirely sure why I haven't ever got around to checking 'em out. However, when 'The Faith & Patience' turned up in the post for review, their new full-length album, it's finally provided me with the perfect opportunity to do so and see, first-hand, just what all the fuss is about. And it seems that all the buzz and fuss is fully justified as this is a record full to the brim with punk-edged rockers, loaded with instantly catchy refrains and melodically anthemic choruses. It's also an album that barely lets up in its fast-paced energy. Both unrelenting and infectious in its up-tempo impetus, 'The Faith & Patience' is a wildly entertaining listen from start to finish. Full of great compositions that are performed with unremitting confidence and conviction, Electric River are the real deal.

Predominantly switching between semi-distorted and fully distorted guitar (with a modicum of clean/acoustic sounds sporadically thrown into the mix), songs are weighted with just the right amount of six-string bias, which allows for neat build-ups into crescendos of heavier, sing-along parts. And bassist Sponge has a voice ever so apt for the music as his delivery adheres to a nice balance between quasi-punk dissonance and rock grit. The production's also top-notch - there's enough polish but simultaneously retaining a rawness that both feeds and creates the album's undeniable energy. Listening to Electric River, it's easy to see why they've earned main stage slots at prestigious festivals such as the Levellers' very own Beautiful Days. In fact, 'The Faith & Patience' is verging towards the might of said band's seminal 'Levelling the Land' in that each and every track has potential to become a classic; there really is no filler at all. If they can maintain this sort of quality on future releases then Electric River have the potential to become a dominant force in the rock scene.
