Finnish band Firenote's self titled debut album offers great promise and is generally pleasing from start to finish. The album is polished straightforward melodic rock and its overall sound should appeal to fans of some of the finer artists featured on the Now and Then/Frontiers Labels. The self titled opening track and follow-up ‘Danger’ provide the album with a very strong start with their stomping rhythms and big choruses making them instantly likeable. The rocking but more commercial ‘Sara La Fountain’, the belting power ballad ‘My Love Will Never Die’, the riffy and extremely catchy ‘Speed Freak’, ‘Love Me Or Let Me Live’, ‘Mayday’, ‘Suddenly’, ‘Heartbreaker’ and the superbly titled storming closer ‘She Stole My Speedos’ are of such a consistently high standard that anyone of these tracks could be the album's highlight. Although there is a lack of variety the abundance of quality that runs throughout shouldn't ruin your enjoyment. The overall musicianship is very strong but Ricky's voice, which reminded me of Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween) and the aptly named Hammond's understated synthesizers, which filled out the sound nicely without being intrusive both really impress. Firenote's debut is likely to be one of the finest melodic rock albums you'll hear this year.
