FOLGE DEM WIND
www.myspace.com/folgedemwindofficiel
I've been moaning to anyone who will listen about a dearth of excitement in music releases these past few months. Very few metal albums seem to have stood out as innovative, and that is a very sad state to be in indeed. However, perhaps it's too early to write off this year just yet because, timely, I happen to have been given Folge Dem Wind's latest to blow out the cobwebs. No doubt you will be seeing this advertised alongside generic black metal releases, which is a pity; they're much more than that. Of course, there's nothing original about their black metal underpinnings but that's like saying Supercars aren't amazing because they share the same basic 'four-wheels and an engine' design as a Rover Metro. It's what Folge Dem Wind has done with the genre that sets them immediately, and triumphantly, apart. As with the Nu-Hardcore scene, the French seem to be in the midst of something of a musical revolution right now; taking staid musical genres and reviving them in what in hindsight seems like obvious ways. A talk-box on the closing track for example; I will never hear 'Living on a Prayer' in the same way again - it's a thoroughly evil effect. Being unafraid to let songs find their own direction has allowed some incredible, thought-provoking, musical arrangements. The aforementioned closing track builds, trance-like, to a middle section that is straight out of doom before the asylum screams signal the end in waves of guitar noise. Playing Anaal Nathrakh through an Isis filter would just about give you similar results. I cannot sing the praises of this album highly enough.
