Don’t get me wrong, I’ve nothing against bands re-hashing melodic classic hard-rock, but when they just wash over you and leave pretty much no impression on you at all, then surely something’s amiss. This is the problem with the latest Glyder album ‘Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ and it’s been troubling me somewhat! After grimacing my way through the first listen, after about 10 listens it has started to show the occasional highlight, but I still dread listening to it to try and find something interesting to say. On paper, having received great reviews for their previous two albums and having opened for Metallica in Ireland and played with the likes of Thin Lizzy, Dio and WASP, you’d maybe expect something a little more impressive, but alas not. Live, they do come across very well and having seen them supporting Fish, I did have high expectations for this, but it appears they may be one of those bands that just come across better live than recorded, as recorded they sound like a pub band you’d probably enjoy nodding along to down the pub on a Friday night. So what’s the problem? Well, I can’t fault the standard of musicianship, technically it’s good and some of the lyrics are interesting too, but generally the songs are extremely mediocre and edging on dull, and there’s just something about the vocals in that whilst they’re perfectly in tune, they’re just… well, dull and uninspiring. The rather clichéd ‘classic-style’ production and mixing doesn’t do it any favours either. It aint all bad though. The three bonus tracks at the end are well worth waiting for, especially the outstanding ‘Elverstown’, composed by guitarist Pete Fisher, a simply beautiful (but far too short) guitar-centred track, layered with ethereal female vocals, that effectively saves the album from total mediocrity. Generally centred far too much in “yesterday” rather than looking forward to “tomorrow” and making their own stamp on the classic rock scene – it moves me not.
