GOATWHORE

Goatwhore don’t mess around - no fancy intros for them! Straight in and straight for the jugular - I love it! The guitar riff is punishing from the very first and punches as a heavy weight in the mix. ‘Carving Out The Eyes Of God’ is this, New Orleans, band’s fourth album, and the first I’ve heard from them but on the strength of this I’m certainly going to be checking their back catalogue. Although they have a fantastically heavy sound with a very fat bottom end during the riffing they aren’t afraid to bring a bit of melody to the proceedings courtesy of some sharp playing by founder guitarist Sammy Duet through his ‘themes’ and lead work. The rhythm section of Zack Simmons on drums and Nathan Bergeron on bass provide the perfect backdrop to the exhilarating sound that Goatwhore peddle, as vocalist Louis Benjamin Falgoust II, presides over the proceedings, sounding like Teutonian guttural singer Tom Angelripper from Sodom. Fast chug and blackened thrash is the best way to describe Goatwhore’s sound on this album but I hear hints of that New Orlean’s sludge courtesy of Eyehategod creeping into the sound as well. ‘Carving Out The Eyes Of God’ is a confident album from a confident band. This is a rip roaring solid release, that whilst breaking no boundaries is a life affirming reminder of why metal is so damn good.
