GORMATHON

Gormathon’s second delivery gives us one more taste of Swedish metal. We all are aware of the tales about the Swedish and their amazing musical contributions. It’s a country of big talents. In this case, I can only say that Gormathon has a lot to learn. ‘Following the Beast’ starts promisingly, until it’s invaded by the apparent new trend of “Viking-style” clean vocals mixed with death metal. Don’t get me wrong, this singer, Tonny Sunnhad, has an amazing range of vocals, but I don’t think they are being used in the best way they could. This man can deliver great and deep growls, but when it’s followed by some somewhat hysterical harsh cleans, it somewhat kills the mood for me. However, if applied without making it the main thing on the song, it would actually sound good.

This album is quite hard for me to describe, you have a few nice surprises now and then and an overall heaviness on the guitars that can provide you a few head bangs. But the choruses? They sound cheesy-catchy to me. It’s almost like a half-way-there castle invasion. One good thing about ‘Following the Beast’ is that you can explore a lot of different singing styles, with a well-structured instrumental with really nice drum breaks. And something else very important: the guitars are not everywhere trying to define the path of the entire song. They are there to make a stable wall. Sadly, I don't like songs that are too stable and too safe. If you are into this new wave of castle invasions surrounded by big forests, or if you are a fan of Amon Amarth, you might like this album.
