GUANO PADANO
www.guanopadano.com
This is a soundtrack without a movie. Picture pulp fiction detectives and femme fatales, steam trains making their way across the Wild West at sunset, Hawaiian surf, exotic market places filled with snake charmers, persistent traders and sweet aromas, country and western dancing hicks, the charms of the Orient, sleazy electronic funk with a sleek, jazzy bass line, all in a Morricone-meets-Leone narrative. Mellow, beautiful, bluesy, eerie, the moods keep moving as the piece unfolds and the vistas broaden. Guano Padano’s array of instrumentation is wonderful, the tones and timbres bringing something new with each listen. Cinematic, the album works as both bricolage and pastiche as the band are more than aware of the abundance of allusions they’re making. Multi-faceted, the album is as weird as it is inspired, as diverse as it is directed, and as colourful as it is distinctive. If you like such works as Zorn’s ‘Spillane’ or ‘The Gift’, or maybe Patton’s ‘Mondo Cane’, then check it out. There are more than a few similarities in style and a couple of holes across the record but Guano Padano’s second album is vast in its musical scope and abundant in atmospherics. Turn the lights off, press play, close your eyes, and enjoy the show.
