Hallowed are from Ireland, which is the home of a pretty healthy rock scene at the moment with bands like Glyder and, especially, The Answer. The band consists of vocalist Camillus Croke, the twin guitars of Ian O'Sullivan and Mike Daly and the rhythm section of Cathal Murphy on drums and bassist Noel Cunningham. They were formed in 2002 and, after numerous line up changes, seem to have stabilised. This 4 track EP is a taster of the band's forthcoming album, 'Seed of Nephilim', and kicks off with the song 'Hear You Scream'. This is an up tempo track in style, with a sound that is similar to Maiden's 'Holy Smoke'. In fact, the song is an interesting mix of NWOBHM and more contemporary speed/thrash metal. The second track, 'Air of Paranoia', has a more up to date sound with some meaty riffs and backing vocals that are bordering on death metal. 'The Book of Man' follows and has echoes of Metallica plus some good guitar harmonies. The EP finishes with 'What Lies Within' which begins with Dave Mustaine style vocals and again features some solid riffing. Overall, the EP is well produced, with good muscianship and vocals. They borrow from a number of sub-genres such as traditional and thrash metal but have enough originality to mould their own sound. In short, Hallowed have demonstrated enough potential for the release of 'Seed of Nephilim' to be awaited with interest.
