HEIDEVOLK
www.heidevolk.com
‘Uit Oude Grond’ (From Old Soil) is the second full length album from Heidevolk, a pagan folk metal band hailing from Gelderland, Netherlands. It becomes apparent with songs such as the opener ‘Nehalennia’, ‘Ostara’, ‘Dondergod’, ‘Reuzenmacht’, ‘Karel Van Egmond’ and album closer ‘Best Bij Nacht’ that their sound is generally built around some great metal riffs, powerhouse rhythms, traditional folk instruments and vocals sung in their native tongue that make a similar impact as Rammstein's Till Lindemann. ‘Gelders Lied’ is a slower, moodier piece with the beautiful lead lines standing out whilst complimenting the intense feel of the track. ‘Alvermanns Wraak’ is an awesome folk metal instrumental, which you can either jig or bang your head to and features some fine violin work from session member Irma Vedelaar. The excellent ‘Deestring’ provides a real contrast to the rest of the album, being a hypnotic balladic instrumental stripped down virtually to just finger picking and soft violin. On the whole ‘Uit Oude Grond’ is cracking air punching, foot stomping stuff and proves that Heidevolk are accomplished musicians who have a great ear for producing music, which is both heavy and extremely catchy. If pagan folk metal sounds interesting and fun to you then you will almost certainly love this fabulously entertaining album.
