HOVERCRAFT PIRATES

'...When Our Wake Hits Your Shore' is the second full length release from Hovercraft Pirates and by fuck is it an impressive slab of up tempo, punk infused, groovy rock/metal fun. Rattling along at such a fast pace for the majority of its duration, the Pirates' sophomore album emanates a raw rock 'n' roll energy that is all too often absent from the work of other outfits attempting a similar fusion of styles. From start to finish, with no filler, every track will have you bouncing around like a blitheful lunatic to its sonically infectious allure. The last album I recall to achieve such a consistently powerful dynamic is Winnebago Deal's 'Dead Gone' - Hovercraft Pirates are stylistically different in many ways although convey a similarly powerful, no-nonsense vibe to said band through their approach. Bursts of retro-rock rear their head at certain points but are encompassed by a more contemporary neo-punk vehemence that snaps away at your ears in-between the grooves of yore. For that reason alone, Hovercraft Pirates have a potentially wide ranging fanbase awaiting them, or at least certainly deserve such, as fans of classic rock will no doubt find as much here to get excited about as the listener who demands a bit more bite with such music. Front man Paul Blue delivers a fine vocal on each track, his voice evading generic clichés and bringing something a little different to the mix, lying somewhere between The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster's Guy McKnight and Gogol Bordello's Eugene Hütz. In short, this is...well, just go buy this infectious fucker of an album right away. You won't regret it.
