When I received ‘Condemned’ my preconceptions of unsigned albums were instantly put aside before I’d even played the CD. The artwork shone brighter than even some of the major players’ albums and this surprise carried on upon listening. Whilst not the cleanest recording you’ll have heard it’s still a polished piece of work, easily on a par with many of the bigger names in Metal. Basically this isn’t your typical do-it-yourself job. ‘Condemned’ often flits between a variety of recognisable styles spanning Soft Rock, Nu-Metal, Metalcore and most notably Thrash; however it all gels into one groovy, earthy sound. This grittiness is completed with vocalist Bane’s contributions, delivering a soulful and undoubtedly passionate performance throughout the record. The perfect display of this comes in the form of ‘Lead The Blind’, a distinctly emotional song laid by the foundations of some powerfully tight riffs. Despite lacking complexity or extreme aggression you can’t deny there’s a lot of power resounding through these songs, not always but often demanding your attention. The mixture of tempo throughout the CD adds yet more variety, ranging from faster pieces such as title track ‘Condemned’ and ‘The Prophecy’ right through to the slower ‘Locked in Torment’ and ‘Ties That Bind’. In fact it’s these slower songs that are more refined with the swifter ones sometimes feeling oddly put together, much akin to when you listen to a demo and you can tell why some bits were changed. Whilst none of the songs fit a formula final song ‘Vampurity’ should feel a mess with some many ideas crammed in but it works in a very progressive way and actually the lack of repetition begs for a repeated listen. This album won’t blow your socks off but there’s definitely going to be a few particularly infectious moments that grow with time and make you come back even after you’ve moved on to a different album.
