JOB FOR A COWBOY
www.jfacmetal.com
Job for a Cowboy seem to be living the dream of almost every new metal band out there: post a few songs on MySpace, get a few fans, get a deal, tour the world. As much as that’d be a simplified version of the band’s history and there was surely much more of the hard slog involved, it’s a nice thought to think that it could happen that way. But no matter how you look at it, they’re not doing too badly, what with their third album having just been released and a tour with Cannibal Corpse.

There’s nothing half-arsed about ‘Demonocracy’ and it hits heavy and hard. From the very first track, ‘Children of Deceit’, it’s a wall of noise, so make sure you don’t have your volume too loud or at least know what to expect (I’m speaking from experience here). There’s plenty of musical technicality going on throughout but without it being too overpowering and, for want of a better phrase, “show off-y”. There are two distinct guitar-styles that are intertwined to create a fairly impressive sound overall; one is your standard metal guitar work and the other is a more disjointed and progressive sound that tends to come into force more when guitar harmonies are involved. In terms of instrumentation, although the guitars do seem to be at the forefront, enough time, effort and energy is given to the bass and guitar parts too and there are moments of excellence for both these but they seem to be few and far between in terms of prominence within the music.

Although the album is, as a whole is, to use my favourite word, “fine” there’s no one standout track that really hooks the listener in. This is partly due to a lack of variety in general, which could easily have been overcome with a bit more change in timbre and vocal styling. ‘The Manipulation Stream’ is a better lighter than the rest of the tracks but at same time it isn’t really. Having said that, it’s a bit conflicting because it is quite a good listen and a very well-crafted piece of work. I’ll have to remain on the fence for this one.
