KILL THE CAPTAIN

Yorkshire’s latest metalcore stars are 5-piece Kill The Captain and this self titled mini album is their first serious release after supporting everyone and anyone who is big in the metalcore scene nowadays. ‘Intro’ brings a distortion laden riff filled track to kick things off, but with somewhat comedy styled lyrics such as “How d’you like me now bitch” and “Get fucking dead – no offence baby”, it is hard to take their music seriously from the very offset. The heavy vocal work is good, but the singing and gang shouts don’t work too successfully this time. Some nice bass drum heavy beats are displayed in ‘Final Prayer’ although, unfortunately, the guitar work is rather bland at points and the clean vocals let the track down greatly. ‘As I Said’ and ‘Grown Of Thorns’ both contain brief moments of musical genius and show you what the band are actually capable of; however, overall, it just falls short. The instrumental interlude is fantastic, really captivating and completely draws you in. ‘Good Luck With That One’ follows next with its groovy riffs and then its heavy beats hammer away until the last moments. Album closer ‘Your Own King’ is probably the best track on the album, with the introduction to the song sounding like an offcut from a Gallows album at points but, yet again, the vocals let it down somewhat. A decent enough attempt, but nothing that hasn’t been heard before.
