LIFELESS
www.lifeless.bandcamp.com
Lifeless are a self-proclaimed ‘crossover-thrash’ band from Middlesbrough. They consist of vocalist Nixon, guitarists Ben and Gordon, bassist Paul and drummer Pacey (a name that couldn’t be more appropriate!). They have toured extensively over the past 18 months, both in the UK and Europe and have shared stages with Gama Bomb, Mutant and The Spermbirds to name but a few. This eponymous release is the band’s first full length effort and was recorded in Old Vicarage in Wakefield. I can’t imagine one building being put to two more different uses! The album begins with ‘Judgement Day’ which was a recent single and is one of the longer (relatively!) tracks at just over 3 minutes (there are 12 tracks on this release with an average length of 2.5 minutes). As you would probably expect, the track is unremittingly frenetic and sets the scene for the tone of the whole album. The track is well performed and vocalist Nixon has the Mustaine-esque sneer down to a fine art. The overall quality of the tracks is good but the standout tracks, in my opinion, are ‘N.N.S.’ which has a Metallica style intro and a great riff, ‘Nuclear Bore’ which is classic thrash, ‘Harder They Fall’, a track where the pace slows just a little and ‘Born Dead’, the longest track on the album at around 4.5 minutes and, as a result, is probably the track that is allowed to develop during its length. In summary, this is a really strong release and should, alongside the extensive touring, be the catalyst for Lifeless to raise their profile and allow them to bring their music to new audiences.
