LOST SOCIETY

As soon as I saw the album cover for Lost Society’s debut album I knew they were going to play thrash. What I didn’t expect was for it to be this damned good. I then read the blurb and was pretty amazed to see that all four members are teenagers (the youngest clocking in at an embryonic seventeen), and my interest piqued even more! There are a lot of thrash revivalists at present but many of them actually witnessed the birth first time around. I would be surprised if this lot’s parents remember those heady days in the early 1980s when Exodus, Destruction, Sodom, Possessed, Testament, Destructor, Venom and the debut from Voi Vod took my world by storm. However, I reckon Lost Society have access to a time machine because ‘Fast Loud Death’ is giving me exactly the same feeling I got when listening to those bands and that is a very good thing!

Hailing from Finland (there’s a surprise), Lost Society were formed in early 2010 and after gigging relentlessly they entered the ‘Global Battle of the Bands Contest’ where they won their preliminaries and final. They came over to London last December for the world final which gave them a great amount of exposure outside of their country for the first time and thank goodness for that. I wouldn’t have thought Nuclear Blast would have signed them so early on in their careers unless they saw something pretty special! ‘Fast Loud Death’ is a short, sharp and very welcome 35 minutes of thrash brilliance that mixes the speed, groove, dexterity and variety of early Exodus and slams it headlong into a bar fight with early Venom. There is some wonderful musical talent on display here and Sammy Elbanna (vocals & guitar), Arttu Lesonen (guitar), Mirko Lehtinen (bass) and Ossi Paananen (drums) should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. Even song titles such as ‘Lead Through The Head’, ‘Toxic Avenger’ and ‘Fatal Anoxia’ sound like they should be on one of those early thrash masterpieces, although I will forgive them some youthful exuberance for naming one track ‘Piss Out My Arse’! Produced and mixed beautifully by Nino Laurenne (Amorphis, Lordi, Ensiferum) Lost Society probably won’t win many awards for originality, but when the music is this well written and played with such fire and passion you really cannot complain. ‘Fast Loud Death’ is easily the best retro thrash album I’ve heard this year and I think it’s going to be staying at the top of the list for the foreseeable future.
