MALEFICE
www.myspace.com/malefice
Ho hum. We've been here countless times before; competent metalcore with flourishes of anthemic choruses. Everyone here plays their bollocks off, and I'm sure that each member of the band is playing with a level of conviction usually reserved for psychopaths. At times I even caught myself tapping my foot (metaphorically of course) to some of the groovier breakdowns. The problem is that this CD is bogged down in formulaic fast-slow-fast-crunchy-shout-my-fucking-ass-off-god-I'm-pissed-off-with-the-world type blueprints. I have no problem with unoriginal music, as long as it moves me emotionally, or physically. Malefice don't succeed on either count. This is a shame, because they can play extremely well. Work on some unique arrangements or stylistic change, and I'm sure we could get excited about these guys. As it is, I will have forgotten all about this CD by next week. If, however, you're turned on by metalcore, and can't enough of its Maiden-esque grunt, I suppose you could do worse than investigate this CD. The rest of us can get on with life and wait for something truly exciting to tickle our nether-regions.
