MAX RAPTOR
www.myspace.com/maxraptor
Here we have the debut mini-album from Midlands based UK crew Max Raptor. Punk infused rock is the order of the day, bursting with catchy riffage, memorable hooklines and rife with an infectious energy that'll have you pressing the play button over and over to relive its succinctly engaging sonics. Alluded to by the album title, each track could be regarded as a 'portrait' of socio-political commentary, thus Max Raptor lyrically embrace the 70s style punk aesthetic underlying their sound as, of course, punk bands in said decade invariably married music with contemporary discourse. That is, songs with something to say beyond mere punk/rock clichés. Most importantly, however, vocalist Wil Ray sings with such passion and conviction that he evidently means every word uttered. Moments of alt-rock, most notably in 'Beasts' and 'Ghosts', are also introduced into Max Raptor's core sound to add a little diversity during particular passages, but the up-tempo punk/rock underpinnings remain the primary impetus in each of the tunes. Add to that a raw and resonant sound courtesy of Dan Weller's production/mixing talents that enhances the songs' overall impact and 'Portraits' sure is one hell of an addictive listen. Amazing stuff. Based on this debut, I predict Max Raptor will go far.
