MELONHEADMAN

As a groove ‘n’ boogie-ridden dose of southern rock, from the “Southern States of the UK” (i.e. Kent), ‘Medicine Man’ is MelonHeadMan’s first single since the release of their debut album ‘The Good and The Bad’. With clear influences of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers with a little of ZZ Top-style groove, title track ‘Medicine Man’, with its groovalicious walking bass line, southern-styled guitar licks, solid drumming and slurred rock vocal lines, is a fantastic opener, with the slightly darker ‘Hunting Crows’ following on, ending with a very classic southern-rock-styled guitar solo a là Skynyrd’s “Freebird” and ‘Boogie City’ sounding as you might expect but with a little more, well, boogie! The mixing on this release is worth a mention, as it’s great to hear absolutely everything that each band member is playing, with nothing seeming lost or out-of-place and, whilst the production is relatively lo-fi, its vintage feel really adds flavour to the release and gives a certain live feel to it, and gives a sense of a band having real fun playing a style they love, which is a great aspect to portray through your music and I expect that a MelonHeadMan gig, makes for a particularly fun night out. One to watch out for live, and an impressively fresh-sound despite its vintage roots.
