MILESTONE

According to the blurb, Milestone “Attack your senses like the warped bastard child of Queens Of The Stoneage loaded up on a vintage batch of whisky”! An unusual analogy and certainly not one I would have used myself as it doesn’t appear to make much sense but, at any rate, their debut EP ‘Medicate The Night’ (love that title) very much deserves your attention and a good bottle of malt while you are listening would go down very well indeed.

Hailing from Bridgend, South Wales and only formed in early 2012, Milestone sit in the alternative-rock spectrum but they do it with a damn sight more passion and oomph than many other bands in the genre, mixing not only that style but bands such as Foo Fighters and Them Crooked Vultures and twisting them together with a big dose of classic rock. Opener ‘Dirty Knees’ starts out as a pretty convincing alt-rock track and then two thirds of the way through introduces a cracking riff that changes the song completely. For the remaining four tracks of the EP, it’s great retro rock with a modern twist.

After all the mediocre alt-rock acts I’ve heard recently, Milestone are an absolute breath of fresh air. This is how rock of this nature should be played. It’s commercial without alienating older rock fans; even though the band are young this sounds mature and authentic and it’s played and produced excellently. There is a great variety of pace and closing track ‘Bless Your Soul’ could even be referred to as a ballad, proving that Milestone are not a one trick pony when it comes to song writing. Jack Howells, Adam Pain, Kris Archer and Lewis Pilling have created a more than assured debut. If they have more songs of this quality up their sleeves then a full length album is going to be a very intriguing prospect. This band have indeed been a ‘milestone’ for me because I can now safely say that I really like a band in this genre!
