MY DYING BRIDE
www.mydyingbride.net
Hot on the heels of their eleventh studio album released just last year, Yorkshire's perennial doomsters, My Dying Bride, are back with a new four track EP, 'The Manuscript'. And with three of the tracks (only 'Var Gud Over Er' is brand new) conceived and forged during the writing and recording sessions for 'A Map of All Our Failures', the material, as expected, carries a very similar vibe, both compositionally and in general sound. So, once again, there's a discernibly 'live' sounding production which works well for the compositions. The organic nature of the general sonics is laid bare, particularly an acoustic sounding drum kit that hasn't been marred by Pro Tools polish, and guitars where I'm left with the impression as if one take has sufficed each time as amp feedback and scratches from sliding up and down the strings are all sporadically present. While some will see these as bothersome blemishes (and even lazy or careless), I actually find it quite refreshing in a day and age of over-produced music. Sure, it's a little rough around the edges, but it's good to listen to music once in a while that feels 'real' and 'alive'. As for the actual compositions...well, it's My Dying Bride so 'moribund' is a more apt description than 'alive' - expect lengthy passages of down-tempo, melancholic, occasionally epic/atmospheric sounding doom adorned with sporadic flashes of violin and Aaron Stainthorpe's clean/death/narrated vocal delivery and you won't be disappointed. Expect anything other than that then don't even bother. My Dying Bride are one of the mainstays of doom's perpetuality (and popularity as a subgenre) and you always know what you're going to get from the Yorkshiremen, but that's both a comforting and reassuring advantage for their globally widespread fanbase. And as well as stylistic tenacity, you can always count on the band to deliver quality in terms of songwriting and that's exactly what's on offer with 'The Manuscript'. One EP, four tracks, quality doom...enough said.
