MY FAVOURITE RUNNER UP
Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear. If there’s one thing I love it’s overly shiny pop-punk and I’m sure the punk stalwarts love it just as much. What’s not to love? Slightly too loud overly enunciated vocals, derivative guitar parts and a kind of constant pep about it are all signs of a great little EP, honest. Enter: My Favourite Runner Up. The singer sounds exactly like someone else but I can’t quite remember who. Believe you me; it’s annoying me like nothing else. It’s some American emo singer anyway and there’s no excuse for that kind of carry on when you’re from an undisclosed UK location. Whoever he is (both MFRU’s singer and the American bloke); they can both stop it quite frankly.
It’s pretty much the same throughout, so if you don’t like the first track then it’s highly unlikely that any of the other tracks are going to grab you either. I could wrack my brain for a nice little example of that bit where they did that little thing that was quite good but I’d really be scraping the barrel for an example. Sorry guys. The whole EP is so twee that is grates on me and, I’ll be honest, I could only bring myself to listen to it once in its entirety before I started to get a bit (read: a lot) angry with it. At one point my ear actually started bleeding, that wasn’t really related to the music rather than to a stray cotton bud but I think it’s worth mentioning. On the plus side, there are only five tracks so at least it’s condensed annoyance.
