NASTY IDOLS
www.nastyidols.com
Swedish band Nasty Idols, who were formed in 1987, had a promising career but suffered as the overrated grunge movement took a stranglehold on the early 90s music scene. The band broke up in 1995, having released 3 albums up to that point. Thankfully, with classic rock making a comeback, Nasty Idols re-united in 2006 with a new drummer (Rikki Dahl). ‘Boys Town’, the band's fifth album, shows off a style of glam rock/sleaze that is high on energy and full of rock 'n' roll attitude. ‘Rock Out’ is an impressive opening track and is powered by a riff that is much like the one that drives Twisted Sister's ‘What You Don't Know’. The title track, ‘Scar For Life’, ‘48 Hours’, ‘Evil One’ and ‘It's Not Love’, which take their main influences from early Backyard Babies and early Motley Crue, are storming kick ass rock tracks with some enjoyable singalong choruses. The latter two, which feature a metal edge, are outstanding tracks and my personal favourites. ‘Nite Like This’ and closing track ‘It Ain't Easy’ are unremarkable, fairly average ballads. The former is reminiscent of Dogs D'amour whilst the latter (the better of the two) is in the vein of Poison's ‘Every Rose Has It's Thorn’. Given the right media exposure, Nasty Idols have a real chance of enjoying some success, particularly as Glam and Sleaze bands are enjoying a renaissance with great enthusiasm being shown for Motley Crue and Buckcherry's forthcoming appearances at this year's Download festival. I have no doubt that fans of these genres, particularly those of the aforementioned bands, will enjoy ‘Boys Town’.
