NEAERA

The big problem is there are so many generic sounds in metal now - played exceptionally well, admittedly, but ultimately not giving the band an identity, and unfortunately this is where Naera fall. Don’t get me wrong, this young German band show a lot of promise, they all know how to play, and with a real vengeance, but ultimately taken as a whole I was left feeling a little cold after hearing ‘Omnicide’. This is their fourth album and the professionalism shows through but I don’t really think I’m hit by an original idea which, to me, is an important part of a band's sound. But, for those of you who want a pummeling metalcore sound then this isn’t bad - everything in the right place and a solid production that allows the instruments to be on full frontal attack at all times. In the blurb that accompanied the CD it says, “…brutal mosh parts, aggressive blasts and fierce melodies”, and I would not disagree at all. There does seem to be a plethora of similar sounding bands doing this style of metal and well from it which is the impression I get of Naera when looking at their website. I just personally hope this isn’t the future of metal as there are still so many innovative bands out there pushing forward whereas, to me, Naera are playing the safe option.
