NECROPHOBIC

Necrophobic's latest starts in typical fashion with some Slayer-inspired tunes designed to get the masses moshing. The first few spins of this disc really had me wanting more. However, on subsequent listens, the cracks in the veneer became more and more apparent. Trouble is, there's a wealth of bands doing similar things, all equally competently and with the same ferocious vigour. As a straight ahead death metal influenced blackened thrash thingy, it works quite well. On a loud system it will definitely get your blood pumping and your horns in the air. But that's it. Dig deeper, and this is akin to a vegetarian Chinese meal; bereft of meat and giving you an empty feeling half an hour later. There are no real hooks to claw you in, or progressions to dwell on. Only 'Wings of Death' and, to a lesser degree, closer 'Death to All' show promise with their atmospheric and layered leanings. Again though, this only sticks out due to the mediocrity of what has fallen before them. Granted, if you've got bored of either Lamb of God's latest, or waiting for Slayer themselves to release theirs, then by all means buy this CD. If, however, you want a little depth with your extreme music, look elsewhere.
