NEUROMA
www.myspace.com/neuromametal
A quick glance over the track titles gives more than a distinct idea of what Neuroma are about: grindcore with dark sense of humour. If neither of these appeal to you, you’re in the wrong place. If maniacal laughter shrouded in unremitting beats and face-tearing grindcore riffs is your thing, stop reading this and go buy ‘Extremophile’ now. You won’t be disappointed. ‘Gash in the Attic’ opens with possibly one of the most chilling lines in movie history: “We came to wreck everything and ruin your life. God sent us,” from ‘Romper Stomper’, and is followed by the same level of sheer brutality as depicted in the violent scenes peppered throughout that movie. Neuroma’s humour then, is a socially aware intellect, a strikingly painful awareness of the absurdity and indifference of mass culture, and a heightened level of disgust at the institutional inequalities that underscore western society. What better means than grindcore to express such brutality, then? Since their inception in 2008, Neuroma have improved no end. According to reviews elsewhere, the musicianship on their 2008 demo had a few holes, but they are wounds that have evidently been treated. What has emerged is a band that is furiously tight and unremittingly brutal. ‘Extremophile’ is chaos, but it is a chaos that is controlled, focussed, channelled into the sharp edge of a constructive violence that addresses the inequalities that Nietzsche’s “bungled and botched” dare not face. Just get it; you’ll see what I mean.
