OLIVER WEERS
www.myspace.com/oliverweersband
Weers first sprang to prominence in his native Denmark after participating in that country’s version of the X Factor. This is his second release, following on 2008’s ‘Get Ready’. For this album, Weers has put together a band consisting of guitarists Laki Ragazas and Anders Borre, drummer Morten Hell Born and bassist Anders Bo who also handles production duties. The album begins with a brief intro before the title tracks kicks in. This is a good, solid song but is surpassed by the next cut, ‘All My Life’ which possesses a driving power and is one of the standout numbers on this release. The next few tracks carry on in a similar vein before we get to ‘Beautiful Rain’ which is the first slower number on the album; here Weers gives a very strong performance and is reminiscent of Geoff Tate at his best. The next couple of tracks raise the tempo again and of a good standard. ‘Devil’s Chain follows and is another of this album’s highlights. It is a song with plenty of power, some great guitar work and a strong vocal performance. ‘Demolition Man’ follows but the best is saved for last; ‘Rainbow Star’ is a superb track and brings all the strengths of the band members into a tremendous climax, with the song built round a massive riff. This is a strong release with some excellent songs and some really good performances from the individual band members, and an excellent vocal display from Weers. I think I might move to Denmark if this is typical of what appears on the X Factor over there. It’s infinitely superior to the generic dross we have to suffer in the UK!
