POISON SUN

Poison Sun consists of Martina Frank, the wife of Herman Frank, German metal god and Accept guitarist, Hermann Frank himself and the rhythm section of drummer Florian Sconweitz and bassist Stefan Hammer, both recent members of Silent Decay. Despite being a ‘band’, it would appear that Poison Sun were put together as a vehicle for Martina, who has provided backing vocals for UFO in the past, to display her vocal prowess. Unfortunately, the songs, even the cover of the Pointer Sisters hit, ‘I’m so Excited’ are so heavy (anyone who has heard Hermann’s fairly recent solo release, ‘Loyal to None’, will know how heavy he likes his rock!) that Martina’s vocals, with the odd exception like the power ballad and closing track ‘Forever’, struggle in the mix, thereby giving the impression that she hasn’t got the vocal power or presence needed for this musical genre. It’s a shame because, vocals aside, the album has tremendous power. The guitar pyrotechnics of Hermann are as good as you’ll hear and the rhythm section provides the bludgeoning backbeat perfectly. Perhaps a bit more ‘polish’ in the studio, as far as the vocals are concerned, would have paid dividends and enabled me to give this release a better review. As it stands, it’s a case of ‘so near and yet so far’.
