PRIMAL

There’s actually very little to say about this release as it does pretty much what it promises but not a lot else: they promise Polish black metal and that’s what it is. Not that the Polish bit means much. They also have this message on their website for anyone having a bad day: “To all life haters – go kill yourself, it’s very simple”, naturally you can expect a feel good romp from the album then…

It’s all pretty standard fare and does kind of sound like it was recorded in an empty Roses tin at times. There’s nothing here that really grabs me and, at the same time, there’s nothing that particularly offends me by it. They’re not shy of penning a song of a decent length and I’m 100% behind this, but normally if a song passes the five minute mark you expect a decent amount (or, indeed, some) progression, not just a continuation of the same for the duration. There are some nice musical moments but these are interspersed with guitar solos that don’t seem to fit in with the rest of the song or are just so ostentatious it makes me a bit angry. I’m sure that these are things that will be ironed out with time, experience and a bit more cash for production but, for the time being, it’s only going to really appeal to lovers of lo-fi black metal.

Essentially, there’s a million and one bands that sound pretty similar and there’s nothing in particular that’d make me choose this above any of the others. It feels somewhat “hollow”, which is a bit disappointing. I’ll give Primal some credit seeing as from what I can tell it is just a one man band but by the same token if you can’t do it properly…
