SENTENCED TO SUFFER
www.myspace.com/sentencedtosuffer666
Hailing from Guildford in the UK, Sentenced To Suffer's self-released debut EP, 'Defiling The Altar', offers four tracks that can be loosely described as death-thrash. While it would be erroneous to label Sentenced to Suffer as a progressive band, their songwriting does manage to incorporate an interesting quasi-original fusion of metal styles such as the groove-infused outro of 'Judgement Day'; track three's Maiden-esque twin guitar harmonies and scalar descents; the black metal inspired dissonance of the single string riffs on title track 'Defiling the Altar'; the clean guitar passage three quarters of the way through 'Sinners of Time' with clean vocals reminiscent of Subterranean Masquerade; and some traditional thrash riffing. With tonally disparate death growls performed by three out of the four band members, Sentenced To Suffer's polyvocal approach brings to mind Into Eternity although, musically, they bear little resemblance to the Canadian prog-metallers. Each song also boasts skilfully played guitar leads from Chris Latham and Ronan Moynihan, with particularly impressive fretboard work as they trade off solos on 'Break The Silence' in a well mixed piece of music. In fact, 'Defiling the Altar' is a generally well produced effort for an amateur band, although the snare drum sounds slightly tinny, which is particularly noticeable during the sporadic bursts of blast-beats in all the songs. For a self-released EP, 'Defiling the Altar' has a surprisingly professional looking design in its jewel case packaging which even includes lyrics to the four tracks in the enclosed inlay. Overall, nothing overwhelmingly original here, though 'Defiling The Altar' is an admirable debut from a talented bunch of musicians who are definitely a band to look out for in the future.
