SISTER SIN
www.sistersin.com
Swedes Sister Sin return with their sophomore album, 'True Sound of the Underground', two years after impressive debut 'Switchblade Serenades'. With that first release an enjoyable and well executed exercise in retro-mimicry, this latest offering from the female-fronted rock-metallers treads the same musical path with their 80s influences laid bare once again. We have discernible elements of Crüe, W.A.S.P., Warlock, Accept, Priest et al blended into an up tempo excursion of trad-metal pastiche, mixed together with sporadic bursts of power metal. 'Heading for Hell', in particular, fits the power glove, not sounding too dissimilar to Finnish super-group Sinergy...in fact, the verse's vocal melody is very reminiscent of 'The Bitch is Back' from said band's 'To Hell and Back' album. Hmmm, subconscious cribbing perhaps? Whatever the case, if you approach 'True Sound of the Underground' expecting originality then you will undoubtedly be disappointed. If, however, you revel in retro-inspired metal performed adeptly by a bunch of skilled musicians then you will be sure to adore Sister Sin. Personally, I lie somewhere in-between. While 'True Sound of the Underground' is an easily accessible, aural romp chock-full of the genre's clichés and idioms, therein also lies its weakness, at least for my tastes, as I like to see a band progress with their sound between albums. Frontwoman Liv, who has one hell of a meaty rock-metal voice, claims on the press sheet: "Our band is not doing some kind of retro, retread bullshit! This is a serious treatment to the raucous spirit of true heavy metal." A somewhat paradoxical statement, the truth remains in the listening experience, not the 'Sound of the Underground', so go judge for yourselves. Still, this is a solid album that will have mass appeal in the current scene's climate. If, however, you're in search of retro-influenced metal with a more contemporary sounding edge, then check out fellow Swedes Crucified Barbara instead for they do this sort of thing far better.
