SIX FEET UNDER
www.sfu420.com
There are many bands who always strive to progress both their own sound and musical genres with each new release, and contrarily a great number of other bands who don't. A band that require no introduction, veteran Floridian death metallers Six Feet Under return with their tenth studio album in thirteen years, and fit firmly into the latter category. This is not, however, a criticism as it is kind of reassuring there are still some bands out there eschewing metal's ephemeral trends and delivering to their loyal fanbase exactly what they want - more of the same. And that is exactly what is on offer here with 'Death Rituals' - unequivocal, hard-hitting, death metal complete with Chris Barnes' trademark cookie monster vocals. To be fair, 'Death Rituals' does perhaps mark a little progression in the band's sound with some groove-infused thrash passages such as on tracks 'Involuntary Movement of Dead Flesh, 'Seed of Filth', and 'Shot in the Head', albeit the latter has distinct overtones of Sepultura's 'Dead Embryonic Cells'. A cover of Mötley Crüe's 'Bastard' will no doubt appease some, appall others, or simply serve to amuse - personally, I'd rather listen to Chris Barnes' growled guttural delivery than Vince Neil's wailings any day...and Six Feet Under's version does amuse me, although I find it difficult to see the value in its inclusion on this album. Overall, 'Death Rituals' is a well produced, no-nonsense release from one of death metal's best-selling bands, and the Floridians are likely to retain their hegemony within the genre with this album.
