SONS OF ICARUS

Sons of Icarus are a young British four piece. Three of the members, Andy Masson (vocals and guitar), Alex Masson (bass and backing vox) and drummer Mike McQuillan met at school in Northamptonshire and jammed together before enrolling at the Academy of Contemporary Music where they met the final piece of the jigsaw, guitarist Steve Balkwill. Although this is the band’s debut release, they already have serious credentials having opened at both Sonisphere and Download in 2011 as a result of winning the Marshall ‘Ultimate Band Contest’. The EP starts with ‘You Want It All’, an excellent mid-tempo track with a brooding feel and a stoner style riff courtesy of Balkwill. ‘Not Myself’ is next up and is a more up tempo number with a resemblance to Wolfmother or The Answer but with enough of the band’s personality to make it their own sound. ‘Can’t Let Go’ is the third track on the EP and is another up tempo cut with good use of percussion (is that a cowbell?) by McQuillan and a heavy, slightly slower paced mid-section. The final track is ‘Sick To The Teeth’; it’s slower paced with the stoner influences again on show but mixed with a bluesy, trad rock approach to make an intoxicating blend. This really is an unbelievable debut release and the band show a maturity beyond their relatively tender years. If they carry on in this vein they will surely have a bright future and that can only be a good thing if it produces further releases of this quality.
